Mac Miller Talks His Debut Album, Working With Just Blaze

Mac Miller has been heating up the streets with mixtapeslike K.I.D.S. and Best Day Ever over the past few years, but the 19-year-old is gearing up for the release of his official debut.

The Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania native spoke to Jessie Maguire about his forthcoming Rostrum Records album, explaining that he’s being given complete creative freedom.
“Luckily, my label situation, I’m on Rostrum, that’s basically just being with my family,” he said. “That’s the beauty of it, we’re doing everything independently. Asfar as the creative process, I don’t have to answer to anybody. They have full 100 percent faith in what I do creatively.”
His goal is to make a cohesive record without any added pressure. “For the album, that’s the thing. When people go in and make an album sometimes, they get lost by thinking ‘This is my album,’ and it stresses them out,” he continued. “For my album, I want to go in there and just make a bunch of music and pick my favorite songs and put them together and make something that sounds like one complete thought."

The up-and-comer recently surprised listeners after revealing he went into the studio with super producer Just Blaze , stating that the two hit it off during a trip to New York City.

“The thing with Just was, a while ago, I came out to NewYork and Artie told me ‘Just Blaze wants you to come to the studio.’ And I was like, OK! Let’s go. I got there, just kicking it, not expecting to make any music - which we did,” he said. “I just stayed there all night until like 9 in the morning. We talked a lot about music and our ideas and business with music, andhis past and stories from himand stories from me and stuff.”

He came back for a second visit and this time, Just supplied him with a house music-inspired beat. “I came back a second time, and we started kicking it again. This time, I was like, ‘Just, I need some beats!’” he said. “He was like, ‘Alright.’ He gave me this one beat that was this hip-hop ass beat and thisother joint that was for house music. I was like, that’s tight, let me use that.”

Though the fate of the recordis unclear, Miller is looking forward to getting off tour and focusing entirely on making new music. “I get to hang out finally and sit and make music, which is something I haven’t done in a long time. Since K.I.D.S., I haven’t sat in one place for months at a time and made music,” he said. “So that’s myplan for the summer, is to just work on music, get an album together. I got a special album coming out at some point.”
