The Sixth Man of the Year award has been dominated over the past few years by players like Jason Terry of the Dallas Mavericks. Since Terry can average 20+ points off the bench and seems to fit in perfectly as this team six man, he is the front-runner for the award every single season when the Dallas Mavericks are playing at a high level.
This season things might be changing though as the two-time defending NBA champion Los Angeles Lakers could have the new front runner for the award in the form of Lamar Odom. Even though Lamar Odom has been a starter on this team in years past, with Andrew Bynum finally healthy for an extended period time head coach Phil Jackson feels that Odom is a better asset to the team coming off the bench and he doesn’t disagree.
This season Lamar Odom was one of the biggest All-Star snubs along with LaMarcus Aldridge (Portland Trail Blazers). Not only has Odom put up solid numbers all season long, but he has been one of the biggest reasons for the Lakers success as of late and is more than deserving of this award.
Other Sixth Man of the Year candidates:
Jason Terry, Dallas Mavericks
With another solid season under his belt off the bench for the Dallas Mavericks, Jason Terry is a candidate for this award once again, but may fall just short to Lamar Odom in the voting due to the fact that Terry has won before.
Marcin Gortat, Phoenix Suns
The Phoenix Suns are on the verge of an extensive rebuilding process as Steve Nash comes to the end of his career and the team starts to think about the future. During this NBA regular season, the Phoenix Suns made a trade before the NBA trade deadline and acquired Vince Carter, but they may have gotten a better deal at of their backup center Marcin Gortat.
Even though Gortat isn’t considered to be one of the best big men in the league, he has proven his worth to the Suns as of late with some solid numbers.
