Liam Hemsworth gets lead role in new film The Hunger Games

Liam Hemsworth has landed a lead role in The Hunger Games, an adaptation of Suzanne Collins' smash hit novel.

The Aussie actor will play Gale Hawthorne. The Hunger Games
is the first in a trilogy of science-fiction novels set in the
not-too-distant future, where young people are chosen by lottery to
participate in a series of brutal televised games (think Battle Royale).

Hemsworth joins Oscar nominee Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson in the film, which is set for release next year.

The Hunger Games has been on the New York Times best seller list for more than 100 consecutive weeks.

Earlier this year, Academy Award nominee Jennifer Lawrence, 20, was cast as Katniss Everdeen, the heroine of the best-selling young adult books by Suzanne Collins.

Eighteen year-old Hutcherson, who costarred with Annette Bening and Julianne Moore in The Kids Are All Right, will play Peeta Mellark, Katniss' love interest in the post-apocalyptic flick.
