Humans Enter Fukushima Reactorfor First Time Since Quake Disaster

Not since an enormous quake (and subsequent explosions ) crippled the Fukushima plant has anyone stepped foot inside—the radiation has been too thick for humans, leaving robots to do the job . But not today, as workers braved the millisieverts.

After the robot squad reported lowered radiation levels, a team of twelve, working on quick shifts to prevent over-exposure, entered the plant's leaking reactor to repair an urgently-needed ventilation system.

Should it prove successful, the functioning ventilator will allow for more manned missions inside the plant, as radiation levels diminish further—an important path towards (safely) shutting the place down for good. [ AP and Kyodo News ]

Japan earthquake and tsunami: Key facts and figures

This roundup of the state of the crisis in Japan following Friday's earthquake will be updated throughout the day.

How many deaths have resulted from the quake?
Early Monday morning (local time), authorities put the death toll at 1,597. That number could reach 10,000, reports Kyodo News. The police chief of Miyagi Prefecture said Sunday that there is "no question" that at least 10,000 in the prefecture of 2.3 million are dead.

How powerful was the quake?
The U.S. Geological survey has assigned the quake a magnitude of 8.9, while Japan's Meteorological Agency has upgraded it from an 8.8 to a 9.0. It is the most powerful earthquake to hit Japan since record-keeping began in the late 19th century. By comparison, the 2010 Haiti earthquake was a 7.0, and the 2010 Chile earthquake was an 8.8.

The Japanese television station NHK reports that there is a 70 percent chance of magnitude 7.0 aftershocks in the next three days.Prime Minister Naoto Kan has called the disaster Japan's biggest crisis since World War II.

Which nuclear reactors are in danger?

The two plants that have been most affected so far are the Fukushima Daiichi (No. 1) and Fukushima Daini (No. 2) plants, both located in Fukushima Prefecture and run by the Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO). The Fukushima Daiichi plant, the 14th-largest nuclear facility in the world, was the first to be severely damaged when an explosion Saturday crippled its unit 1 reactor and injured four workers, one of whom later died. The emergency cooling system at a second Daiichi reactor, unit 3, failed early Sunday, and engineers have injected seawater into both reactors to prevent overheating and avert a possible meltdown. However, because the water gauge at unit 3 is not working, it is impossible to tell whether the seawater maneuver has been effective. If the fuel rods in one of the reactors overheat to the point where they burn through the walls of the reactor, dangerous radiation would be released. An evacuation order has been issued for people within a 12-mile radius of the Daiichi plant and within 6 miles of the Daini plant.

Later on Sunday, a state of emergency was declared at a third nuclear plant, in Onagawa. Authorities say the three reactors in Onagawa are "under control."

How severe is the threat of a nuclear crisis in Japan?
Japan's nuclear safety agency has rated the damage to the Fukushima Daiichi plant a four out of seven on the International Nuclear and Radiological Event Scale. By comparison, the 1986 Chernobyl disaster was a seven, and the 1979 Three Mile Island meltdown was a five. A four signifies an "accident with local consequences."

What steps have been taken to aid victims of the quake?

Japan has deployed 100,000 soldiers in the rescue and recovery operation, doubling its initial deployment. The USS Ronald Reagan aircraft carrier, with its crew of almost 6,000, arrived in Japan on Saturday to assist Japanese troops; other U.S. warships are also providing assistance. Because of the difficulty of road travel, Japanese rescue forces have turned to efforts by sea and air, including helicopter rescues. Numerous international aid teams arrived in Japan on Sunday.

How hard has the tsunami hit the United States?
Tsunami waves hit the West Coast of the United States on Friday and smashed ships, ripped out docks and caused flooding in Hawaii, CNBC reported. At least five people along the West Coast were swept out to sea Friday, and one of them was missing and presumed dead. The sea level rose nearly three feet as far south as San Diego on Friday and destroyed the busiest recreation port on the Oregon coast. The cleanup effort is expected to cost millions of dollars.

Nuclear Power Plant blast / radiation leak in Japan might cause acid rain: BBC Text Message Hoax ~ MyKiRu IsYuSeRo

The Fukushima Daiichi (Dai-ichi) Nuclear Power Plant blast in Japan is now causing worries to the people here in the Philippines.

Two hydrogen explosions happened at the Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Plant. The first one was last Saturday, a day after the earthquake, then another one just today, Monday.

AssociatedPress posted on Youtube a video of the recent explosion. Watch!

Now, the Filipinos are feeling worried after 2 warning messages circulate thru text or SMS.

One text message says that the nuclear power plant blast or the radiation leak in Japan might bring radioactive clouds to the Philippines and pour acid rain.

The text message warns the people not to go out when it's raining because of the dangerous acid rain. "WARNING: 4:30 in the afternoon, sumabog ang isang nuclearpower plant in Fukushima, Japan. Kapag umulan daw mamaya at bukas, wala daw lalabas. Kapag lalabas ka, siguraduhing hindi mabasa ng ulan dahil delikado ito at posibleng masunog balat nyo, makalbo o magka-cancer. HAVE MERCY. Pls pass!"

Then the other text message is allegedly a news flash from BBC News in the UK. It says, "BBC Newsflash! Japan gov't confirms explosion, radiation leak at Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plants. Asian countries should take necessary precautions. Remain indoors first 24 hrs. Close doors or windows. Swab neck skin with betadine were thyroid area is, radiation hits thyroid first. Take extra precautions. Radiation may hit Phil. starting 4PM today. Pls send to your love ones. Prevention is better than cure. So no more harm to be more cautious esp. for our health. God bless us all."

Radiation levels affecting Singapore not true

An SMS that has been making the rounds warns that radiation from Japan reaching Singapore has turned out to be a hoax.

The text message claims to be a news flash from BBC news, advising people to remain indoors.

It reads:

"A nuclear power plant in Fukumi, Japan exploded at 4:30 AM today. If it rains tomorrow or later, don't go outside. If you are outside, be sure that you have rain protectors. It's acid rain. Don't let it touch you. You may burn your skin, lose your hair or have cancer. Please pass, stay safe and remind everyone you know.

The hoax originated in the Philippines and has been circulating here.

Nuclear experts in the Philippines were quick to debunk the rumour. In a statement, the Philippine Nuclear Research Institute (PNRI) also said radiation levels in the Philippine atmosphere were normal as of Monday (Mar 14) and showed “no increase” since the nuclear plants in Fukushima reported sustaining damage in their reactors.

Japan: Third blast at Fukushima nuclear plant, fire at reactor 4, workers leave plant, crisis worsens (UPDATED) - Boing Boing

Image (Reuters): Tokyo Electric Power officials hold an illustration of a nuclear plant as they answer reporters' questions at the disaster center in Fukushima, northern Japan March 15, 2011. A fresh explosion rocked a damaged Japanese nuclear power plant on Tuesday where engineers have been pumping sea water into a reactor to prevent a catastrophic meltdown in the wake of a devastating earthquake and tsunami. Some plant workers were ordered to leave the site, a sign that the situation may be getting more serious at the complex that was damaged by a massive earthquake and tsunami.

A third explosion has struck Japan's beleaguered Fukushima nuclear power plant in as many days, after Friday's 9.0 earthquake and subsequent tsunami. This time, the plant's operator, Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) says radiation levels reached 8,217 microsieverts per hour near the plant's front gate, roughly two and a half hours after the blast.

What caused the tsunami?

The most powerful earthquake recorded in Japanese history, magnitude 8.9. The tremors were the result of a violent uplift of the sea floor 80 miles off the coast of Sendai, where the Pacific tectonic plate slides beneath the plate Japan sits on. Tens of miles of crust ruptured along the trench where the tectonic plates meet. The earthquake occurred at the relatively shallow depth of 15 miles, meaning much of its energy was released at the seafloor.

How does the earthquake compare with others?

This was the sixth largest earthquake in the world since 1900, when seismological records began. The most devastating earthquake to strike Japan was in 1923, when a magnitude 7.9 tremor devastated Tokyo and Yokohama and killed an estimated 142,800 people. The Kobe earthquake in 1995 was a magnitude 6.9 and caused more than 5,000 deaths and injured 36,000 others. The earthquake that wrecked Christchurch in New Zealand last month was a magnitude 6.3 event. Around 30 times more energy is released as the magnitude of an earthquake increases one unit, for example from magnitude 8 to 9.

No damage reported as tsunami reaches Easter Island, Galapagos

Gloucester ... Easter Island/Iron Man

Santiago - The tsunami generated by Japan's massive earthquake reached the west coast of South America late Friday, but caused little initial damage.

The wave traveled nearly 16,000 kilometers to the Galapagos Islands off Ecuador and Chile's famed Easter Island. Minor flooding was reported in the Galapagos, but only higher waves were recorded on Easter Island, authorities said.

In Ecuador, more than 260,000 people were evacuated as a precaution, and in Chile tens of thousands of residents in low-lying areas were brought to safety. Authorities also issued alarms in Colombia and Peru.

The magnitude-8.9 earthquake struck north-eastern Japan Friday, unleashing a tsunami and leaving more than 1,000 people believed dead. Tsunami warnings were issued across the Pacific.
